Origins
Founded in the early 1990s, the Riverfront Artist Club had its start in the basement of one of the iconic brownstone factories at 701 River Street in Troy, New York. Inspired by the names of the crossing streets at the building’s entrance, River Street and Front Street, the name of The Riverfront Artist Club soon emerged. As the story goes, there was no heat in the basement studio, the masonry was falling off the building’s sides and there were leaks in the old roof dripping down all six floors and onto the floor of the studio. Despite these crumbling amenities, the artists and models of the club had established a solid foundation and were soon meeting on a weekly basis. They quickly grew to host three regular sessions, including a nude sketch session, a portrait session and a long-pose session, some held in the morning and others in the evening. There were two rotating stages and during their sessions the artists and models experimented with approaches to lighting, costuming, posing, and visual concepts. Offered to adults of all backgrounds and skillsets, the artists had the opportunity to develop their portfolios, unique visual voices and their media skillsets, while in tandem the models had the opportunity to develop their portfolios, gestural posing and meditative practices.
The club continued to meet at this location through the early 2000’s, before moving the studio to Delmar.

Then and Now
The club experienced several moves and expansions throughout the 2000s and 2010s, meeting at Gochee’s Garage in Delmar for long pose nights, the Illium in Troy for short pose nights and Union College in Schenectady for various length poses. With a session running every day of the week and by opening their doors to artists of all skill-sets, the club quickly became a creative hub of the Capital Region and kept going strong up until they left the studio in Gochee’s Garage at the start of the 2020 Covid pandemic.
Returning with masks and social distancing, the club resumed their sessions in the summer of 2021 at the Bellhouse Project, located at 1 Maple Avenue in Brunswick, New York. Surrounded by a backdrop of beautiful stained glass windows, the artists and models were able to get their work underway again, meeting on Wednesday nights for short pose sketch sessions before they moved to the Art Associates Gallery on Railroad Ave in Albany. The club worked at this location for about a year before relocating to their current studio at Dino’s Photography Studio in Albany. Recently, the club has expanded its offerings to a Long Pose Session held on Monday nights and a Short Pose Session held on Wednesday nights.
If you’re an artist in the capital region and interested in making figurative art and expanding your portfolio, you may meet us there!

Exhibitions
In 2003 and 2004, the club held their first nude figurative art shows at the Maple Ridge Barn Gallery in Cambridge, New York.
The next time the artists exhibited was in 2007, when they organized a Traveling Figurative Art show, showcasing their work in 4 different galleries throughout the Capital Region including Barringer’s in Albany, State Street in Schenectady, the Saratoga Arts Center and River Street in Troy.
The club has plans to host a new round of annual shows, showcasing work from the current attending artists. The first one will be held in December of 2025 at The Arts Center in Troy, New York, eighteen years after the group’s last showing.
It will be called Figure & Flow and if you’re another artist, model or an art enthusiast we hope you’ll join us there!
